Prof. Dr. Andree Kirchner, LL.M.
Professor Dr. Kirchner is Founding Director of the Institute for the Law of the Sea and International Marine Environmental Law (ISRIM).
He is professor of international law at the University of Applied Sciences in Bremerhaven since 2007, where he is teaching in the programmes "Maritime Technologies" and "Integrated Safety and Security Management" since 2005. Moreover he has had several teaching assignments:
- since 2004 as Visiting Fellow at the IMO International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI), Malta;
- 2001-2009 as lecturer at the Master Programme "European and International Law" at the Bremen University;
- 2000-2007 as Resource Person at the UNEP/UNESCO/BMU International Postgraduate Training Programme on Environmental Management for Developing and Emerging Countries at the Centre for International Postgraduate Studies on Environmental Management (CIPSEM) of the Technical University Dresden.
Moreover, he is Counsel at the law firm MLS Legal GmbH - Rechtsanwalts- und Fachanwaltsgesellschaft in Bremen/Berlin.
Professor Kirchner is practising in the law of the sea and international and international marine environmental law since 1997.
He was an independend advisor on international law to the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) from 2002-2006. In this capacity he participated in numerous inter-ministerial and EU co-ordination meetings as well as international meetings and conferences, being part of the German Delegation, inter alia, to:
- United Nations Open-ended Informal Consultative Process on the Law of the Sea (UNICPOLOS),
- Ad hoc Open-ended Working Group on Protected Areas der Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD),
- Working Group on Marine Protected Areas, Species and Habitats (MASH) of the OSPAR Convention.
Before that he was an independend advisor to the GAUSS Institute on Applied Environmental Protection and Maritime Safety at the University of Applied Sciences Bremen. In this context he, inter alia, lead the International Conference on Marine Environmental Law (ICMEL) in 2002 in Bremen.
In the framework of two research projects Prof. Kirchner was assigned to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in Nairobi in 2000 as well as to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in London in 1998.
