The Hugo Grotius gGmbH serves public-benefit purposes through "1. the advancement of science and research" according to Section 52 (1) and (2) of the German Fiscal Code (Abgabenordnung).

 

It is the operating institution i.a. of the Institute for the law of the Sea and International Marine Environmental Law (ISRIM). The Institute works under the freedom of science, research and teaching according to Article 5 (3) and Article 19 (3) of the Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany (Deutsche Grundgesetz) and respects the Recommendations of the Commission on Professional Self Regulation in Science (DFG).
